Sweet Pea: Discussion Questions

Hello bookies,

I hope this message reaches you in good health and spirits. For all of my bookies in the Atlanta area, i pray that all is well with you. IT has been a hectic few days in the Atlanta area and I'm happy to say that we are back to normal!

Well, Sweet Pea was a a delight to read and I hope you enjoyed it as well. Below are our final set of discussion questions for Leaving Atlanta.

REMINDER: We being "The Mountain Between Us" on Monday!

1. The novel is divided into three sections, each with a different point of view. How did this affect your experience reading the novel? Which section was your favorite and why?

2. The three children in this novel all have very different home lives. Which parents do the best job with their children?

3. For the author, Tayari Jones, the Atlanta Child Murders were a defining moment in her childhood. She has said in an interview that: “This is when found out how the world worked. That children could die. That there were people who would want to hurt you for no reason at all. But it was also when I found out that there were people who we didn’t even know, who would do whatever they could to keep us safe.” Was there a moment in your own childhood that caused you to look at the word with a more grown-up perception?

4. The character, Mrs. Greir, makes a big difference in Octavia’s life. Did you have a special relationship with a teacher in your life? How do you think that student-teacher relationship has changed over the years?

5. The issue of social/economic class is very important in Leaving Atlanta. In your reading of this piece, how did you see economic class as a factor in the children’s lives?

The Moutain Between Us

Hello Bookies,

Well I hope everyone is really enjoying reading Leaving Atlanta as much as I am. I'm sure section 2 left you speechless!! Remember this week is our break week! This will allow you bookies who received your books late a time to catch up with the group and post your answers.

I am sure by now you can already guess what next months book will be! Yes, you are correct "The Mountain Between Us" by Charles Martin. This is a story about two strangers heading back to Seattle who have to rely on each other for survival when the single engine prop plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness; one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States, after their pilot suffers a heart attach mid-flight. This story is said to be "both a tender and page-turning read, The Mountain Between Us will reaffirm your belief in the power of love to sustain us".

After reading this synopsis of this book it instantly gave me chills. I am excited to read this book and I hope you are as well. Please be sure to have your book ready to sink into by February 3rd, 2014. I will send out a break down for our weekly discussion by February 2nd

Until next post,

Natty Luv

Synopsis
On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport.  Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding.  Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day.   When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection.   And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently.   And then the unthinkable happens.  The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness-- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive.   Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from a climb earlier in the week).  With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens.   Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well.  He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair.  As Ashley eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just settling.  And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben.

As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous.  How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever?

Week Two: Leaving Atlanta

Hello Bookies!!!

Well, all I can say is The Direction Opposite of Home was truly a jaw dropping ending!! I really couldn't imagine Rodney would do that, did you?

Ok so lets dive in to week two's discussion!!

1. One of the most powerful moments in the novel comes at the end of the second section. Do you think that Rodney Green purposely puts himself into the killer’s hands?

2. What do you think is the best way to explain tragedy to young
people?

3. Now that you know how the second section ended, do you think the letter Rodney wrote could cause issue regarding his disappearance?

4. Towards the end of the section Rodney's father found out that not only he was stealing, but hanging with the wrong crowd. Do you think Mr. Green should have allowed Rodney to explain what happened before he embarrassed him in front of his peers?

5. Discuss a time in your childhood where you were embarrased in the way Rodney was embarrassed. If not, do you recall ever seeing someone knew endure a public scolding from their parent.
